Erath County Commissioners Court on Sept. 8 opened and closed a public hearing on a proposed 2025 property tax rate of 0.3811, the county’s stated “no new revenue” rate, and received no public comment.
The court, meeting in the Second Floor Commissioners Courtroom at the Erath County Courthouse in Stephenville, presented a taxpayer impact statement that used the countywide median homestead value of $253,220 (based on the 2024 property tax roll). At the prior tax rate of 0.3913, the statement showed a median homestead tax bill of $990.85; at the proposed rate of 0.3811 it showed $965.03.
The judge opened the hearing for anyone wishing to speak for or against the proposed rate, and, hearing none, closed the hearing. No speakers addressed the tax rate during the separate public-comment portion earlier in the agenda.
County leaders told the court they will consider final adoption of the tax rate and the budget at the court’s next regularly scheduled meeting, which the court identified as Sept. 22, 2025.
Why it matters: The tax rate under consideration is presented as the no-new-revenue rate; if adopted, the rate would reflect growth in property values while aiming not to raise revenue from existing property owners beyond new construction and value increases. The taxpayer impact statement gives residents the specific dollar effect on a median-valued homestead.
Meeting context: The proposed rate and the taxpayer impact statement were read into the record as part of the agenda item titled “proposed hearing on tax rate.” The hearing was convened by the presiding official and closed with no public speakers.
Next steps: The court indicated it will take final action on the tax rate and the budget at the Sept. 22 meeting.
