Jennings County commissioners approved a bundle of routine safety and budget items, including new body armor for first responders, an additional appropriation to cover part-time wage increases, approval to sign a K-9 grant application, and payment of two vendor invoices.
The board approved purchasing updated body armor and helmets for local first responders at a quoted total of $21,600. A presenter said ballistic vests have an industry-standard service life of five years and that the county’s existing vests were as old as 10 years. "Body armor is good for 5 years," the presenter said, adding heat and moisture degrade ballistic fibers over time. Commissioners approved the purchase and directed procurement to fund it from the county safety account.
The commission approved an $8,742 additional appropriation to cover a department’s part-time employee wages after the countywide decision to raise part-time pay to $18 per hour. Staff explained the appropriation is to cover the difference between the budgeted hourly rate ($11) and the raised rate; departments are responsible for submitting hours used during the budget process and the additional appropriation covers actual hours worked beyond budgeted estimates.
Commissioners also authorized the council president to sign a 100% grant application to acquire a school K-9 officer; the application requires a signature to proceed and commission action was limited to permitting the signature for application only. Separately, the board approved two invoices: $3,395 for a special project related to Senate Bill 1 and $1,574.14 for elevator repair work at the courthouse; the elevator payment was approved from the courthouse fund.
All motions in this group passed on voice votes; the transcript records no roll-call tallies for these items.
