Residents tell supervisors two separate 911 systems hinder emergency response; board asks manager to investigate

Several residents used the meeting’s public-comment period to press county leaders for action on emergency communications and coverage gaps.

Pam Lemke, a Chewback resident and healthcare professional, told supervisors she attended an emergency-preparedness focus group and said she was “astounded and horrified that this county has 2 9 1 1 systems,” warning that separate systems could prevent police, sheriff and fire responders from communicating during emergencies.

Kathy Campano of Rio Rico added that two towers near the community remain unused and that bringing them online would improve coverage, boost revenue from leases and help first responders. She also said a published public hearing was not opened for comment, and asked that future notices be advertised clearly.

Another commenter, who identified himself as Jerry and referenced past military experience with interoperable radio channels, described the value of one-channel emergency coordination and urged the county to investigate bridging agencies’ communications.

Chairman Molera said the topic was not on the agenda but that the board would ask county management to look into the county’s 9-1-1 and emergency communications systems. The board also heard a related request earlier in the meeting from a resident asking that the county seek an update from a nearby mine operator about placing rock on a private road.

The comments prompted supervisors to note ongoing emergency-management reviews and to signal follow-up would be considered at future meetings.
