Riverton council approves Riverton High cannon use for home football games

The Riverton City Council on Sept. 2 approved a fireworks permit for Riverton High School to detonate its cannon at home football games on Sept. 5, Oct. 3, Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, 2025 (playoff dates included if Riverton hosts).
Administrative Services Director Miss Harris told the council staff had reviewed the application and recommended approval. Max Mills, the Riverton High School activities director, attended and thanked the council; he said the school included playoff dates in the application to cover possible home postseason games.
Council members opened and closed a public hearing on the permit and approved it by unanimous voice vote.
Max Mills said the cannon is used at home games and that the crew that operates the device, including longtime volunteers, has an established track record of safe operation.
The permit will allow the school to use the cannon on the listed dates; any additional safety or operational conditions will be enforced per city rules and the permit terms.
