Madison Public Library seeks $326,400 supplemental to bring Imagination Center online without service cuts

Madison Public Library officials told the Common Council on Oct. 13 that the 2026 executive operating budget includes a supplemental request of $326,400 to bring the Imagination Center online without cutting other library services.
Tana Elias, representing Madison Public Library, said the funds would primarily cover utilities, purchase services and staff costs. The request would fund one full‑time supervisor and partial‑year staff positions for 2026, enabling the library to open and operate the Imagination Center while maintaining existing service levels.
The library’s base budget is otherwise presented as cost-to-continue. Elias said position reallocations across services have been used to support Imagination Center operations and that projections for private revenues, rental fees and common area maintenance have been updated to reflect recent trends.
“That request for an additional $326,400 allows us to bring the Imagination Center on board without any reduction in existing library services,” Tana Elias said. The council did not take final budget action during the Oct. 13 briefing.
