Madison proclaims October Pedestrian Safety Month and Oct. 15 White Cane Safety Day

The Madison Common Council on Oct. 7 unanimously adopted a proclamation designating October as Pedestrian Safety Month and Oct. 15, 2025, as White Cane Safety Day in the City of Madison.
Jackson Baker of the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired accepted the proclamation and urged the council to continue work on accessibility and safety measures. "It is more than just a date on a calendar. It is a vital commitment to safety and inclusion," Baker said, commending Madison’s Vision Zero initiative and urging continued funding for accessible pedestrian signals, curb ramps and accessible bus stops beyond the downtown core.
The council moved and seconded adoption and, seeing no objection, recorded a unanimous vote in favor.
Ending: Proclamation supporters asked the city to continue prioritizing pedestrian features citywide and to engage advocacy groups on accessibility improvements.
