Plan commission clears unified signage plan for Fort Atkinson School District; staff to verify setbacks

The Fort Atkinson Plan Commission on June 24 approved a package of new signs for the Fort Atkinson School District, approving individual sign applications for the district office and multiple elementary and middle schools and requiring the district to verify each sign’s setback and that none are in a vision triangle.
Jed Draeger, planning staff, described a consistent sign design proposed across the district, noting most signs are dual-post or monument signs and that none of the applications include lighting. Staff’s recommended condition requires each dual-post sign be set back a minimum of 15 feet from the curb face and be located outside the public right of way and vision triangle, subject to staff approval.
Commissioners discussed the Rockwell Elementary sign location in particular. One commissioner suggested the existing single-face sign at Rockwell might be harder to see from Kramer Street and proposed either a double-face sign at the corner or adding a wall sign at the main entrance. Draeger said the district had proposed to replace the existing sign in its current location and had not proposed additional signage. Commissioners asked staff to relay a suggestion that the district consider additional or wall-mounted identification at Rockwell for visibility to drivers unfamiliar with the site.

Staff will require the district to submit the measured setbacks for each dual-post sign to confirm they meet the 15-foot curb-face minimum and that the signs are outside the public right of way and vision triangles before final permits are issued.
