The Fort Atkinson City Council on Sept. 2 approved staff’s recommendation to submit the city’s 2026 recycling grant application to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Director Neven (presenting the item) said the city’s estimated recycling expenditure for 2026 is $287,423.40, an increase driven by a new contract with John’s Disposal. Under that contract the city will pay $6.05 per unit per month for recycling and staff estimated 3,959 units in the city. Neven said the Wisconsin DNR has provided roughly $35,000 in grant funds in recent years and is expected to provide a similar amount for 2026.
Staff recommended the council approve the application and authorize staff to sign and submit it to the DNR so staff can budget the expected revenue in the 2026 operating budget. Council approved the motion on a voice vote.
