The Sunnyside City Council voted unanimously Monday to set a public hearing for 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in council chambers to consider removal of the city manager after the manager filed a reply to a council resolution seeking removal.
The hearing date was set after council members and staff reviewed the procedural requirements spelled out in state law and in the earlier resolution. The council agreed the hearing must occur before a final removal resolution can be adopted once a reply has been filed.
Council members referenced the city's earlier action, resolution 2025-67, which had stated the council's intent to remove the city manager without cause effective 30 days from passage unless a severance agreement were reached. City staff told the council that the manager filed a reply on Oct. 7, 2025, and that RCW provisions require the council to fix a date for a public hearing on removal once a reply is filed.
Councilors did not debate the date at length. The motion to set the hearing for Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. in the council chambers carried on a roll-call vote with all present members voting yes; the council paused briefly to ensure full attendance for the vote then proceeded. The city said a public notice would be issued the following day.
The hearing date establishes a formal opportunity for the manager, council and any interested members of the public to make statements and for council to take any final action consistent with state law. The council indicated it will publish hearing materials and notices in advance of the Oct. 20 meeting.
