Council approves calls to artists for centennial mural and fauna/flora sculpture

The Oviedo City Council on Oct. 20 approved two related Public Arts Board requests: a call to artists for a mural commemorating the city’s 100th anniversary and a separate call to artists for a sculpture representing Oviedo’s flora or fauna.
Keith, speaking for the Public Arts Board, introduced specifications for the centennial mural and asked council to adopt Resolution 4660-725 to advertise the mural competition. The board recommended advertising the call so artists can submit proposals reflecting Oviedo’s “past, present and future.” Council adopted the resolution by voice and roll call.
Later the Public Arts Board presented specifications for a call to artists for a sculpture representing local fauna or flora; staff emphasized that subject selection is left to the submitting artists. Council adopted the related resolution (identified in the agenda materials as Resolution 4668-25) to advertise the sculpture call.
Both actions allow the Public Arts Board to receive proposals and return recommendations to council at a later date; staff said procurement and any stipend/contract details will be handled through the standard agreement and budget amendment process when winners are selected.
