Board members said there is no formal policy restricting exhibitions to Oviedo residents and noted past practice prioritized local artists (Oviedo first), then Seminole County, then connections to UCF. Members asked staff to collect sample procedures from other municipalities, including Sanford and Casselberry, and to place a draft policy on the board’s next meeting agenda so the board could begin formalizing selection criteria.
The board discussed content suitability for the chamber gallery and whether some works might be inappropriate; members agreed a policy should define selection criteria and an approval step. Staff offered to procure policies from other cities and to circulate them in advance of the next meeting.
Board members also discussed engaging local high schools. Staff reported that Hagerty High School and another high school (referred to as Henry/Hadley in the transcript) expressed interest in exhibiting student work but that the city prefers wall-mounted pieces rather than floor sculptures for liability reasons. The earliest student installations would be March, after spring break. The board agreed to invite teacher representatives in mid-January to discuss appropriate submissions and an approval process once the board drafts a policy.
Board members asked that staff contact Richard Perez to acknowledge receipt of his materials and to inform him the board is developing a policy before accepting or scheduling exhibits.
