Johnston County emergency‑medical services told the Board of Commissioners on Oct. 6 that the county needs eight additional positions to staff a 24‑hour EMS unit planned for the soon‑to‑be‑completed Wilson Mills Fire Station 3.
Chief Ted Hardy said the station is likely to be completed before the end of the year and that funds to hire the positions exist in the current budget; the board approved the request to add the eight positions so the department can onboard staff prior to station opening.
The board also approved contracts for two assistant medical directors — Dr. John Wooten and Dr. Andrew Meeland — to increase clinical oversight. Chief Hardy said the goal is for assistant medical directors to provide additional office hours (about four hours per week each) and to backfill when the medical director is unavailable. The county’s previous medical director retired in January and Dr. McCaskill now serves as the medical director.
Commissioners voiced support for EMS staff and praised the system’s performance as call volumes have grown; both measures passed by voice vote.
Provenance: EMS staffing and medical director contracts were presented beginning near timestamp 62:51 and votes occurred near 64:00–66:00.
