Board recognizes AIG‑endorsed teachers, Paideia certification and Special Olympics "Unified Champion" honor

Gaston County Schools honored teachers who completed the AIG local endorsement, celebrated Cramerton Middle School's advancement in the Paideia certification process and recognized the school's Unified Champion School National Banner from Special Olympics.
At the Oct. 20 meeting the board set aside time for "good news" and recognized a series of staff and student achievements across Gaston County Schools.
District staff recognized 14 classroom teachers who completed the yearlong Gaston County Schools AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted) Local Endorsement coursework and case studies; the board acknowledged individual teachers by name when present. The board also highlighted Elizabeth Woodruff, a student teacher who received the North Carolina Student Science Teacher of the Year award; staff said she would be present at the November meeting.
Cramerton Middle School was recognized for advancing from Paideia seminar level to the Paideia classroom certification level, the second of three stages in the Paideia accreditation process. The district described Paideia as an instructional model that combines direct instruction, coaching and seminar discussion to support critical thinking and classroom discussion.
Cramerton also received the Special Olympics National Banner School title for its Unified Champion School Club, which the district said made Cramerton the second Gaston County school to receive that honor (after Ashbrook High School). The board and attendees praised staff and students for inclusive programming and support for vulnerable students.
The meeting also included student presentations: two Cramerton Middle students led the Pledge of Allegiance and New Hope Elementary students presented the character trait of the month (responsibility); 5th grader Benjamin Cast said, “To me, responsibility means having control over something or making sure to do something…without being asked.” No formal board action was required for the recognitions.
