Gaston County Schools to convert donated Armstrong Athletic Club facility; ribbon cutting planned for January

Superintendent Dr. Houchard announced at the Oct. 20 meeting that Don and Mary Doctor have donated the former Armstrong Athletic Club property on Robinwood Road in Gastonia to Gaston County Schools.
Dr. Houchard said the property is valued in excess of $2,000,000 and the district plans to transform the gymnasium into a multi‑space for academic programs, workshops and events for teachers, administrators and students. He said work is already underway and the district expects to hold a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony in January.
The superintendent thanked the donors and said the district will share more details about the facility's planned uses in future updates. No formal action was required of the board at the meeting; the announcement was made during the superintendent's comments.
