The Idaho Senate Judiciary and Rules Committee voted to send two request statutes (RS) to print and moved a gubernatorial reappointment to the Senate floor during its meeting that recessed to allow magistrate judges to appear.
The committee approved RS 32555, a proposal from Sen. Todd Lakey to allow a framework for Department of Defense requests to transfer certain civilian cases on military installations to local prosecutors. Lakey said the measure is intended to start a conversation and that he did not intend to pursue the bill further this year. "My intention is not to run this bill further this year but just to get it printed and and start a conversation," Lakey said.
The committee also approved RS 32568, a request to create a commemorative specialty license plate marking the commissioning of the USS Idaho; the proposed plate would be available only through July 1, 2030. Finally, the committee voted to send the governor's reappointment of Janie Dressen to the Commission of Pardons and Parole to the Senate floor with a recommendation that she be confirmed.
All three actions were taken by voice vote; committee discussion was brief. Motions to send both RSs to print were made and seconded on the floor of the committee; the reappointment was moved to the floor with a recommendation for confirmation. The transcripts record the motions, seconds, and committee voice approvals but do not include a roll-call tally in committee minutes. The committee recessed to wait for magistrate judge presenters and then adjourned after the judges' presentations.
