Smith told the committee she lives with her parents and younger sister on a ranch where they raise quarter horses and cattle and that she and her sister run a club-lamb business. She said she has been showing livestock for about nine to 10 years and that agricultural communications and policy are her primary interests.
Senators welcomed Smith and asked about her plans. Senator Berndt asked whether she planned to attend the University of Idaho; Smith said, "Yes, sir. I plan to go to the University of Idaho." Senators Leahy and Nichols also offered brief remarks welcoming her and asking about what she hoped to learn from the experience.
Smith said she hopes to learn professional soft skills and more about policy and agricultural affairs by observing committee work. No formal action was taken; the remarks were part of the committee's opening business.
