House approves bill allowing LPNs to perform delegated focused assessments

The Idaho House passed House Bill 89 on Feb. 6, 2025, by a 69-0 roll with one member absent and excused. The bill revises nursing practice language in Section 54-1402 of the Idaho Code to clarify the role of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in performing delegated, focused assessments under registered nurse (RN) supervision.
The sponsor, identified as a Representative on the House floor, said prior language allowed an RN to “contribute to an assessment” by LPNs — wording the sponsor described as vague and operationally unclear. The bill replaces that phrase with language permitting LPNs to “perform appropriate delegated focused assessments,” enabling clearer RN–LPN collaboration in patient care.
The House recorded 69 ayes and one member absent and excused; the clerk approved the bill’s title and directed its transmittal to the Senate.
