The Herriman City Council on Jan. 7 approved purchase of firefighting turnout gear and authorized the fire committee and city manager to proceed with repairs to an aging ladder truck.
Council members voted to buy turnout gear from Municipal Emergency Services for $8,052. The purchase was moved and approved during the meeting; council discussion on the motion was brief and the roll call showed the motion carried.
The council also discussed the city’s 20‑year‑old ladder truck. Officials presented two repair quotes — one “in the 37,000‑dollars range” and one in the “32,000‑dollars range” — and staff said the repairs, if completed, would make the truck “almost new” and extend its useful service life by an estimated three to seven years. Staff recommended prompt repairs because the truck is out of service.
The council voted to waive the general rule and authorized the fire committee and city manager to spend up to $38,000 to complete the repairs pending the committee’s review of the quotes and a recommendation. The motion included direction for the fire committee to evaluate the quotes on an apples‑to‑apples basis and proceed with repairs if appropriate.
Ending: Staff said the fire committee and city manager would finalize the procurement and proceed with repairs as authorized; the council asked staff to return to the committee and council if additional budgetary or policy decisions are needed.
