B.J. Stinger introduced himself to a Senate committee as a nominee for reappointment to the Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and described a long family connection to the commission.
“B.B.I. has been in my family since the late sixties — my grandpa was a client of theirs,” Stinger said, adding that his family’s experience and a personal diagnosis of a genetic eye disease motivate his service. He said he earned a master’s degree in social work in May 2023 and that he wants to “help other individuals in Idaho that are blind or visually impaired.”
Committee members asked Stinger about the board’s responsibilities and his qualifications. Senator Wintrow asked him to describe the board’s role and his relevant skills; Stinger said the board generally meets quarterly, reviews reports from the commission’s departments, oversees the commission administrator and considers changes to policy or procedure.
Stinger also offered practical guidance for the public on interacting with people who are blind or visually impaired, urging simple courtesies such as offering help if someone appears to be struggling and using clear, specific language rather than phrases like “over there.”
The committee did not take a confirmation vote during this session; the chair said the committee will vote on Stinger’s reappointment at the committee’s next meeting.
