"Needless to say, we need accountability for our scarce taxpayer dollars, and that's what this RS is about," Senator Brian Lenny said. He described examples to demonstrate scale: he said the Benefit Field Operations bureau has 418 full-time positions while the entire Department of Agriculture has 249.
Lenny told the committee some bureaus oversee hundreds of employees and millions in budget authority and that closer alignment with division-level standards would ensure accountability. He said the proposal is responsive to recurring concerns raised before the committee.
With no further questions recorded, Senator Keiser moved to send RS 32014 to print and Senator Seiderfeld seconded; the committee approved the request by voice vote. The RS will proceed to a formal hearing where department officials and stakeholders can provide additional testimony.
