JFAC declines additional general‑fund enhancement for Commission on the Arts

Kellen McGurkin, Legislative Services analyst, said the commission requested the ongoing match to leverage federal funds and expand arts education grants; in FY2025 the commission awarded 36 arts education project grants from its application pool. Committee members spoke to both sides of the issue: some described arts education as valuable for student learning and supported the enhancement; others said the committee must decline some enhancements because constituents are making difficult budget choices.
Senator Cook moved the committee maintenance motion to advance the budget with no additional appropriation. The motion passed by roll call; the combined committees recorded 15 ayes and 5 nays. The outcome means the commission will continue to operate at maintenance levels without the additional match funding.
