Committee introduces RS 32507 to create insurance-administered fund for wildfire home hardening grants

The House Health and Welfare Committee received an introduction of RS 32507, a draft proposal sponsored by Representative Jordan Redmond intended to set up a fund within the Idaho Department of Insurance to support home hardening against wildfires.
Dean Cameron, director of the Idaho Department of Insurance, told the committee the RS reflects a multi‑year compromise with stakeholders and the insurance industry. “Essentially what it does is it sets up a fund in the Department of Insurance in the State Treasury and that fund would allow the Department of Insurance to issue grants or matching programs, and would allow us to help consumers be able to harden their homes to prevent those homes from being burnt in a wildfire,” Cameron said. “We first and foremost want to protect people's homes. We don't want them to lose their homes.”
Cameron said the proposal also aims to stabilize the insurance market and encourage companies to participate in Idaho’s marketplace. Committee members reserved detailed review of the RS for the Business Committee and moved to introduce the draft; the motion to introduce RS 32507 passed on the committee floor.
The RS was presented as a compromise product built from earlier House Bill 17 work; no dollar amounts or specific grant formulas were discussed at the committee hearing.
