Idaho Museum of Natural History seeks sustainability funds for mobile museum after three‑year grant for van and educator

The Idaho Museum of Natural History in Pocatello asked the Joint Finance Committee work group for limited general fund support to sustain a new mobile museum program launched with a three‑year grant.

Budget analyst Kevin Campbell told the committee the museum holds more than 1.5 million artifacts, typically spends 100% of its appropriation, and is requesting operating funds tied to a mobile museum intended to reach rural Idaho. Director Leif Tapanilla said the museum received a three‑year $180,000 grant from the David B. Jones Foundation that will buy a van in year one and cover part‑time educator support in years two and three. The museum expects the mobile unit to travel about 6,000 miles annually to schools and libraries, with a focus on rural counties.

Why it matters: Museum leadership said the grant provides only limited, term‑limited operational support and that the requested state funds would help sustain materials and operating costs after the foundation grant expires. Committee members asked about metrics beyond attendance; Director Tapanilla said the museum measures programs served and described anecdotal educational impacts while acknowledging measuring learning outcomes is harder than counting visitors.
