JFAC outlines hearing schedule and work‑group structure; program maintenance set for Jan. 17

Keith Bybee summarized how JFAC’s hearings and work groups will proceed over the coming weeks, giving members an overview of which agency clusters will be heard each week and when the committee plans to set maintenance and enhancement budgets.
Why it matters: the schedule determines the committee’s rhythm and which members will examine which areas in detail. Committee members will serve on work groups to “divide and conquer” agency budgets before JFAC reconvenes to set programs.
Schedule highlights Bybee told members the committee will generally meet in JFAC from 8 to about 9:30 a.m., then convene separate work groups beginning at 9:30 to vet specific agency budgets. He said week 1 is orientation and the governor’s overview; week 2 begins agency presentations with the Department of Health and Welfare and secondary education agencies, and work groups will start meeting that week. The committee plans to set program maintenance budgets on Friday, Jan. 17, after staff briefings.
Subsequent weeks Bybee outlined additional weeks: week 3 contains budget enhancement hearings and continued Health & Welfare work; week 4 covers institutions of higher education and statewide elected officials; week 5 includes corrections and economic development; weeks 6–9 cover natural resources, career‑technical education, transportation and capital budgets; JFAC aims to complete business by mid‑March. He told members that agencies labeled “program maintenance only” will not receive individual hearings unless replacement items are requested.
Process note Cochairs encouraged members to get to know their assigned analysts and to begin work with their work‑group teams so analysts can start research and agency follow‑ups.
