Schneider described a decades-long teaching career and said his experience with vision loss led him to seek services from the ICBVI. He told the committee that after initially declining to seek help he attended an ICBVI orientation and the staff and services "changed my life." Schneider said he currently serves as chairman of the commission and that his motivation for serving is to "give back for all that they've done for me." He recounted a personal example of isolation among older visually impaired clients during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting counselors spent time calling clients daily when in-person visits were restricted.
Committee members thanked Schneider and asked follow-up questions about his 10 years of service on the commission and what he had learned. Senator Harris asked about the biggest lesson from his decade on the board; Schneider said his confidence in and respect for the department staff — "the boots on the ground" — was central to his tenure. The committee chair said the panel will vote on the gubernatorial reappointment at its next meeting (scheduled for the following day).
