Committee sends bar-dues increase request to print; sponsor says increases would fund regulatory work

Senator Todd Lakey, sponsor of RS 32-049, asked the Senate Judiciary and Rules Committee to print a request developed with the Idaho State Bar that would increase annual bar dues and license fees for attorneys. Lakey said the bar has not increased fees since 2011 and that the organization relies on member fees, not general funds, to carry out regulation and oversight functions.
Lakey described the proposed increase as category-based, ranging from about $15 to $60 per year depending on license category. "Additional funds are needed to help make sure they do a good job of supervising the attorneys in the state of Idaho," Lakey said.
Committee members asked questions and then moved to send the RS to print. Senator Foreman moved to send RS 32-049 to print and the motion carried on a voice vote; the committee will consider the printed RS in a future merits hearing.
The RS is a procedural request to allow drafting of bill language for future consideration; no fee amounts were enacted at this meeting.
