Idaho FFA officers highlight leadership programs, invite lawmakers to state convention

State officers from the Idaho FFA (Future Farmers of America) described the organization’s three-part model of agricultural education and told the House Committee on Education on Feb. 18 that the program develops leadership skills and career readiness for more than 6,000 Idaho students.
"On behalf of my fellow state officers and over 6,000 Idaho FFA members, we thank you for the opportunity to be here today," said Ashen King, the Idaho FFA state secretary, in opening remarks. Will Brackett, the Idaho FFA state president, described the "three-circle model" of classroom instruction, FFA activities and supervised agricultural experiences, saying the model gives students classroom knowledge, competitive application of skills and hands-on project experience.
Officers described specific program elements: statewide contests (meats evaluation, agricultural mechanics, veterinary science, prepared public speaking), supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs) that allow students to run projects ranging from production livestock to apiculture, and scholarship and grant programs administered by the Idaho FFA Foundation and national FFA supports. Josh Nelson, the state vice president, said scholarships range from around $2,000 to $5,000 and that grants exist for chapter activities, travel and student SAE projects.
Speakers said contests are open to members regardless of farm background; Eliza Dugan noted students raised in subdivisions recently placed at national competitions in dairy evaluation. Officers also invited lawmakers to the 94th annual Idaho FFA state convention set for April in Twin Falls at the College of Southern Idaho.
No formal requests for state funding or legislation were made during the presentation; officers emphasized the program's role in leadership and career development for students across Idaho.
