Kevin Campbell, the Legislative Services Office analyst, said the museum has 8.2 authorized FTP and cares for roughly 1.5 million artifacts. The museum recently applied for and received foundation support from the David B. Jones Foundation for fossil and paleontology education programming.
Museum director Dr. Leif Tapanilla explained the grant will purchase a van in year one and fund two years of part‑time educator salary thereafter. "We applied for foundation grants ... and received a 3‑year grant worth $180,000," he said, adding that the museum expects the mobile unit to travel about 6,000 miles annually and focus on rural areas of Idaho.
Tapanilla told the committee the museum seeks partial sustainability support from the state because the foundation funding is term‑limited and does not cover operating costs such as materials and program supplies. He said the mobile museum program aims to visit every county on a two‑to‑three‑year rotation.
Members asked about performance measures; Senator Goode urged measuring outcomes beyond simple attendance counts. Tapanilla acknowledged metrics are challenging but said the museum tracks program participation and also noted broader impacts such as research loans and student training.
No formal action was taken; committee members asked for additional material in the budget packet describing program outcomes and sustainability plans.
