Beth Elroy outlines environmental and industry experience seeking reappointment to Idaho Board of Environmental Quality

Beth Elroy, vice president of global environmental, safety and sustainability at Micron and current member of the Idaho Board of Environmental Quality, appeared before the Senate Health & Welfare Committee seeking reappointment.

Elroy emphasized two successes she attributes to her board service: the ability of the Department of Environmental Quality to attract and retain technical talent at leadership levels and the board’s capacity to provide oversight in contested cases. "The breadth of the experience on the board has really helped us navigate through some really technical issues," she told the committee.

When asked about goals, Elroy said her priority is to "continue to protect the environment while also balancing business prosperity," and she offered examples from industry where environmental protection and operational savings were aligned.

Sen. Shippey asked about environmental risks from agriculture and about Elroy’s views on cloud seeding. Elroy said she was not an expert on either subject, described her familiarity with agriculture from growing up in rural Idaho and deferred to agricultural experts on balancing production with environmental stewardship. On cloud seeding she said she had only general awareness and would research the topic further.

The chair said the committee will take up Elroy’s reappointment at its next meeting; no confirmation vote was recorded during this session.
