Committee approves cleanup bill for driver education rules, sends HB99 to the floor

Representative Ron Mendyff presented House Bill 99 as a clarifying cleanup to legislation enacted last year governing driver education. He said the earlier language caused implementation confusion and the current bill removes unnecessary verbiage and clarifies that the State Department of Education will maintain a list of approved entities for online or classroom instruction.
"To date we've had 155 students have passed this and there are 808 that are in the process of doing this," Mendyff said, describing early participation in the program. He told the committee that the draft had already been reviewed by the State Department of Education and that the department supported the changes.
Mendyff also noted that during a recent budget review the Department said it was seeking an enhancement to increase per‑student driver education funding from $150 to $300 per student, a separate budget request not contained in this bill.
Representative Shepherd moved that the committee send House Bill 99 to the floor with a do‑pass recommendation. The committee voted by voice and the motion carried.
