University of Idaho highlights INL, water and energy research partnerships at JFAC hearing

University of Idaho President C. Scott Green told JFAC on Jan. 27 that the university’s research partnerships with Idaho National Laboratory (INL), statewide water research programs, and industry partners form a central part of the institution’s mission and economic impact.
Green described a forthcoming agreement with INL focusing on three core areas: nuclear materials and fuel cycling engineering, nuclear integrated energy systems, and power engineering with secure cyber‑physical systems for energy infrastructure. He highlighted collaborative projects including 3‑D printing replacement parts for molten salt reactors and work on hydrogen supply chains and nuclear waste mitigation.
Why it matters: The university said these partnerships align with state energy goals, support workforce development for Idaho jobs in nuclear and energy engineering, and produce applied research results directly useful to state agencies and industry.
Green also described water‑research work coordinated through the Idaho Water Resources Research Institute (hired director Kendra Kaiser) and projects across the state: work on the Portneuf River and Big Wood Valley, Ada County groundwater studies, water quality in Lake Coeur d’Alene related to mine discharge, recharge studies on the Palouse Basin Aquifer, and a unique hydraulic flume facility used to study bridge and dam impacts. “The greatest benefit of this program is the coordination of funding and talent from all of Idaho's higher education institutions,” Green said.
Other initiatives discussed included a planned large research dairy in the Magic Valley to support dairy technology research and workforce training and a $15 million wildfire preparedness grant the university is leading to help communities prepare for, prevent and recover from wildfires.
