East Kingston board approves four policies, accepts Eagle Scout donation and sets Jan. 31 deliberative session

The board voted to approve four policies that were on the agenda for annual review or as new policies: JICJ (unauthorized communication devices), IJ (instructional materials, review/revision), IKB (homework policy, review/revision) and AB (Parental Bill of Rights), according to the motion read into the record. Under new business the board invited Jack Gannon, an Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 223 in Exeter and an East Kingston resident, to present a proposal to build flexible seating kits for an outdoor classroom at the Kingfisher Community Park on school property. Gannon told the board a kit can be configured as a bench or desk, costs $86 per kit (loppers and lumber priced separately), and that the lumber he planned to use was pressure-treated 2x4s at about $12 each; he estimated roughly $1,000 for the project including extras and volunteer refreshments. The board discussed volunteer recruitment, communications support from the school and potential insurance/inspection considerations should the board accept the finished donation. After discussion the board voted to accept the donation and asked Gannon to provide periodic updates on fundraising and volunteer progress.
The board also voted to change the date of its deliberative session to Jan. 31 at 8 a.m. A board member explained the town had recently set a related date and the board moved its session to provide a snow date and scheduling flexibility.
The board received a brief financial update in which staff reported an ending expense balance of $301,420.31 and a grants summary included in the board packet. An engagement letter from the district’s auditors was also shared with the board for review; staff said the auditing firm is the same provider used in prior years.
