Idaho Museum of Natural History requests ongoing operating support for mobile museum program

The Idaho Museum of Natural History asked the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee for ongoing operating support to sustain a mobile‑museum outreach program that a private foundation is currently funding for three years.

Kevin Campbell of the Legislative Services Office summarized the museum’s FY2026 request; Dr. Leif Tapanilla, museum director, explained the museum received a three‑year grant from the David B. Jones Foundation totaling $180,000 that funds the purchase of a van (first year) and two years of part‑time educator support. The museum expects the mobile unit to travel about 6,000 miles annually, reaching rural schools and libraries.

Tapanilla said the foundation grant is term‑limited and the museum’s line‑item request is a partial sustainability request to cover operating costs (materials, vehicle operation and program supplies) after the grant expires. He described the museum’s broader mission, emphasizing collections care (the museum holds more than 1.5 million artifacts) and education programs that reach rural communities.
