Chelsea to open cooling centers and cites AC-donation program amid summer heat

City Administrator Fidel Maltés announced resources for residents to cope with extreme heat and described the city’s air‑conditioner donation program as it enters its fourth year.

"El calor extremo puede ser más que incómodo, puede ser peligroso," Maltés said, emphasizing that heat poses heightened risks for children, older adults and people with health conditions. He advised residents to drink water frequently, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.

Maltés said the city will activate cooling centers at the Chelsea Public Library, Chelsea schools and the Chelsea Senior Center during extreme heat events. He noted the city’s air‑conditioner donation program is in its fourth year and has given more than 1,000 units since the program began, although supply does not meet demand. Maltés also announced that all splash pads and water play features in Chelsea parks are open and read a list of neighborhood parks where families can find outdoor play areas.

Residents were told comment cards about the city’s ongoing comprehensive-planning effort (Chelsea Palante) are available at the library and that more public events are planned this summer; Maltés referenced the Palante web address as provided during the message. The administrator closed by urging neighbors to check on those living alone during heat events.
