Senate committee interviews reappointment candidates for blind services commission and health board; votes deferred

Alan Schneider of Garden City appeared for a reappointment to the Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ICBVI). Schneider described his personal experience with vision loss and his work on the commission, including serving as board chairman. "They changed my life and so I ... am on this board I'm chairman of the board right now and the reason is simply I want to give back for all that they've done for me," Schneider said. The chair told Schneider the committee would vote on his reappointment at its next meeting.
The committee also interviewed Dr. Timothy Rerick of Rexburg for reappointment to the State Board of Health and Welfare. Rerick described his background as a professor in marriage and family studies at BYU–Idaho and said his board work has focused on family policy and advocacy and navigating sensitive topics during the COVID-19 pandemic. On lessons from the pandemic he said tribalism and polarization made nuanced decision-making more difficult and that decision-makers should "hear all perspectives" and resist "our tribal instinct." Committee members thanked both candidates and the chair said votes would occur at the subsequent meeting.
