Residents Angela and Benjamin Allenson told Strongsville City Council on May 19 that sidewalks along Prospect Road are inconsistent and create safety and accessibility hazards, particularly for children and neighbors with disabilities.
Angela Allenson said gaps in the sidewalk network force pedestrians, bike riders and wheelchair users into traffic. She and her husband presented satellite-based maps showing where sidewalks stop and where people must cross or move into the street. “These are not safe conditions,” Allenson said, and she noted that “two years ago, 12 year old Donovan Escander tragically lost his life on this very road.”
Allenson described the problem as both a child-safety issue and an accessibility issue, saying a neighbor who uses a wheelchair cannot leave his driveway without entering a vehicle because of missing sidewalks. The couple said they will email the maps to council and asked the city to prioritize continuous sidewalks on a major residential road that connects neighborhoods, schools and stores.
Council did not take formal action during the meeting but members and staff acknowledged the concerns. The administration indicated staff would review the materials and follow up through engineering and public-safety channels.
