Commissioners nominate Dunberry to fill temporary appraisal district board vacancy

At the Jan. 27 meeting, the Callahan County Commissioners Court voted to nominate Dunberry to a temporary seat on the county appraisal district board until the next election later this year.
County staff explained that state statute gives every taxing entity the opportunity to nominate a candidate when a vacancy occurs on the appraisal district board; the statute does not guarantee that the taxing entity that nominated the outgoing member will fill the vacancy. The vacancy resulted from Kelly McLaughlin’s resignation after she moved out of the county, staff said.
The court discussion noted that the Baird City Council previously nominated Dunberry and that the Baird School Board had not yet made a nomination. Staff reported that Dunberry is knowledgeable about the appraisal district, having served previously as chief appraiser for about 10 years, and that Dunberry said he was willing to serve temporarily.
Commissioner Windham moved to nominate Dunberry; Commissioner Farmer seconded the motion. The court voted by voice with no opposition among those present. The nomination is for the interim period until the next election, which staff said is expected by the end of the summer.
