Beth Elroy, vice president for global environmental, safety, health and sustainability at Micron, appeared before the Idaho Senate Health & Welfare Committee as a reappointment nominee to the Idaho Board of Environmental Quality and emphasized balancing environmental protection with business prosperity.
“I look at first the talent that the DEQ has been able to attract and retain over the years,” Elroy said when asked about successes. She said retaining leadership-level talent and the technical depth on the board have helped the agency navigate contested cases.
When asked about specific goals she would pursue on the board, Elroy said her priority is to continue protecting the environment while also enabling business prosperity and cited examples where environmental improvements and operational cost savings aligned.
On questions about agriculture and cloud seeding, Elroy said she is not an expert on either topic. “When I think about agriculture, it's really protecting the land so that we can continue to grow our crops … in a socially responsible manner,” she said, and added she would defer to agricultural experts on technical issues. On cloud seeding, she said she hears about it in inversions as a Treasure Valley resident but does not have technical knowledge to offer.
The committee will take a confirmation vote on Elroy’s reappointment at its next meeting.
