Senate approves narrowly worded change to nurse delegation language

Boise — The Idaho Senate on March 3 passed House Bill 89, a narrowly focused change to nursing statutes that alters delegation language used when registered nurses delegate tasks to licensed practical nurses.
Senator Galloway, floor sponsor, said the bill replaces the term “contributing to” with wording that clarifies that RNs may delegate appropriate focused tasks to LPNs, which supporters said will better define scope and practice. The sponsor described the change as limited to precise wording on line 28 that will help clarify delegated tasks and promote best practices in nursing.
There was no extended debate on the measure. The secretary called the roll and the vote was recorded as 34 in favor with 1 absent; the bill passed and will be returned to the House.
Senate action: HB 89 passed on the floor with the sponsor describing the amendment as clarifying scope of delegated nursing tasks; no amendments were recorded on the floor.
