The Idaho Senate Health and Welfare Committee interviewed Alan Schneider on his gubernatorial reappointment to the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired on the panel today. Schneider, who identified himself as a former high school English teacher and current chairman of the commission, described how services from the commission changed his life and said he wants to “give back for all that they’ve done.”
The committee’s questioners pressed Schneider on his experience and what he has learned in 10 years on the commission. Schneider said his biggest lesson was learning to “put my trust in the boots on the ground,” praising counselors who phoned isolated blind and visually impaired people during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also recounted seeking services after an onset of eye disease and realizing, after a clumsy moment in a restroom, that he could benefit from orientation and training.
Schneider described his service as chairman and his motivation: “they changed my life and so I am on this board — I want to give back for all that they’ve done for me.”
The committee did not vote on Schneider’s reappointment at today’s hearing; the chair said the panel will hold the formal vote at its next meeting, which the committee stated will occur tomorrow.
