Senate Agriculture Committee holds brief organizational session; schedules rules review

Sen. Tammy Nichols, chair of the Idaho Senate Agriculture Committee, opened a short introductory meeting and introduced the committee's senate page, Gage Griffin. Committee members then gave brief personal introductions, and Nichols told members their packets include the Department of Agriculture 2024 performance report and the agency's strategic plan. She said the committee will begin a rules review on Thursday, with Vice Chair Christy Zitto providing further direction.

"Agriculture is such a vital and critical part to our state," Nichols said as she outlined the committee's intent to elevate its work this session. The meeting was primarily organizational: the chair welcomed pages and reviewed how members should signal to speak; Rachel, the committee secretary, will take a silent role during hearings.

Gage Griffin, the committee's senate page, told senators he attends Emmett High School and expects to graduate with the class of 2025. He said he has an interest in restoring older cars and in marketing; he also said he operates a small clothing brand focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness and is planning to attend Boise State University for marketing.

Senators used the meeting to introduce themselves and identify the districts they represent. Several members noted their agricultural backgrounds or district economies rooted in production agriculture, and some mentioned youth agricultural programs such as FFA. No bills, motions, or votes were taken during the session.

Nichols closed by asking members to review the materials in their packets and by confirming the committee will begin rules review on Thursday, with Vice Chair Christy Zitto outlining how she intends to proceed at that meeting.
