JFAC backs $954,500 for medical and dental residency slots, approves OB-GYN language

The Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee approved $954,500 in general-fund increases and two full-time equivalent positions for health education programs on Feb. 14, funding additional residency slots and related positions.
Approved items include $60,000 ongoing for a Boise internal-medicine resident, $240,000 for Eastern Idaho Medical residencies, $420,000 for new family-medicine residents and a new fellowship in Nampa (including 2 FTP), $120,500 for family-medicine residents in Pocatello, Burley and Rupert, and $54,000 for the Idaho dental education program. The committee also approved $60,000 ongoing general fund for a child psychiatry residency at the University of Utah.
The committee accepted language expressing JFAC’s intent and direction for additional OB-GYN fellowships within the state’s family-medicine training programs and requires the Idaho Graduate Medical Education Committee (defined in Office of the State Board of Education policies) to provide written reports to JFAC and the Budget and Policy Analysis division on progress toward more OB-GYN fellowships.
The motion passed with a combined recorded tally reported as 18 ayes, 1 nay, 1 absent/excused.
