Marion County commissioners agreed Feb. 24 to allow routine utility permits to be approved administratively by staff to expedite permitting, with the condition that any permit the administrator recommends denying will be returned to the board for consideration.
The discussion arose when staff presented a new utility‑permit form for Nextech (a broadband provider) and asked whether the board preferred to continue approving each permit during meetings or authorize administrative approval to speed the process. Commissioners expressed support for administrative handling to speed broadband and other utility deployments but asked that any unusual requests or denials be brought to the commission.
Staff will continue to require the completed permit form, current insurance certificates, the applicable fee and a map. Commissioners asked staff to document the administrative approvals and report them to the board and to bring any permits with potential right‑of‑way issues back to the commission.
No formal ordinance change was proposed; the board provided direction by consensus and administration will implement the permitting workflow change.
