Citizens’ Election Oversight Committee urges more funding, protections and voter education

The chair of the Citizens’ Election Oversight Committee on Feb. 11 presented the committee’s annual report to the Government Accountability and Oversight Committee, urging increased voter education funding, stronger protections for election administrators and continued support for King County Elections.
EJ (chair of the Citizens’ Election Oversight Committee) told the committee the CEOC has reformed internal operations to reach consensus and produce actionable recommendations. The report highlights growing threats to public confidence in elections, including misinformation and emerging technological risks, and urges investments to increase Help America Vote Act compliance through expanded voter education and outreach.
The CEOC said King County Elections is well run and that Director Julie Wise and her staff have been responsive, but the committee recommended that the council consider dedicated funding for voter education and additional measures to protect election workers amid a rise in threats, harassment and attacks. The report also proposes ensuring stronger monitoring and notification when administrative abnormalities occur during tabulation so independent observers can be present.
Committee members and the CEOC chair noted the importance of language access and recruiting language-specific seats on the CEOC. The report also documents internal changes that the CEOC adopted to reduce partisan conflict and make the body more effective as an oversight organization.
The chair said the CEOC looks forward to continuing to work with the council and King County Elections and offered to return to the committee with any follow-up items.
