Committee approves technical correction to public schools health insurance per‑unit amount

The Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee on Feb. 12 approved by unanimous consent a technical correction to the public schools program maintenance bill that sets the health insurance distribution at $21,902 per support unit.
Jared Tatro, deputy division manager for the Legislative Services Office’s Budget and Policy Analysis Division, told the committee the bill text must list the dollar amount so the Department of Education can correctly allocate funding. “Public schools don’t receive 14,130 per FTP. Instead, they receive a dollar amount, an allocated dollar amount per support unit,” Tatro said, explaining the statutory distribution is applied to the 1.55 support unit calculation and rounded to $21,902 per support unit.
Committee leadership asked for unanimous consent to include the calculated amount in the program maintenance bill. “You’ve heard the unanimous consent request. Is there an objection?” the cochair asked. Hearing none, the chair said the request was ordered.
The action applies only to the technical wording of the maintenance bill and does not change the committee’s previously approved underlying policy or total appropriation for public schools.
