Board approves student representatives for 2025-26 after interview process; four recommended

The Ashland School Board voted May 8 to approve recommended student board representatives for the 2025-26 school year. The board accepted the slate after Superintendent Joseph Hatrick described an application and interview process that produced four recommended candidates and two alternates.

Process and selection: Hatrick said the district opened applications to all students for two weeks in March and received nine applications. Seven applicants met an attendance threshold (90 percent attendance for the school year or higher) and were interviewed. Based on combined review of applications, interviews and demonstrated commitment to school culture, the district recommended four student representatives and named two alternates. Current student board representatives introduced the recommended candidates during the May meeting.
The recommended students who spoke at the meeting included Alice Carnahan, a junior at Ashland High School, who described leadership experience in DECA and class leadership and said she hoped to be a voice for students. Milo Leiserson (video) and alternates Toby Pugh and Kyle Litz were also identified during the presentation. Other recommended representatives introduced themselves and spoke briefly about their interest in the role.
Board action: A trustee moved that the board accept the recommended candidates; another trustee seconded the motion and the board approved the recommendation by voice vote. The board chair congratulated the incoming student representatives and welcomed them to next year's meetings.
Looking ahead: The newly approved student representatives will serve on the school board during 2025-26 and will bring student perspectives to future board work.
