The Montgomery City Council voted Sept. 22 to create a new full‑time position for a parks and recreation program coordinator and event organizer. The item had been tabled previously and returned to council for action.
Staff said the Economic Development Corporation and city needs drove the request; the new position is intended to separate event and EDC duties that had increasingly consolidated in a single staff role. Staff and council discussed supervisory lines, with the council indicating the position will report to the city administrator’s office but coordinate closely with public works for event setup and logistics. The position was described as 40 hours/week; grade and exact salary range will follow the city’s classification schedule and be finalized during recruitment.
Councilmember Olson moved to accept the item as presented; the motion passed on a voice vote. Staff said recruitment would follow standard practice (Indeed and other channels) and that council members could be provided access to candidate applications if they wished to review them.
Councilmembers emphasized the need for a clear chain of command and for the new hire to coordinate with public works on logistics (power, lighting, tree wrapping, and other installation needs). Staff said most events for the current year are already scheduled and the new hire would pick up planning for future events and help implement the city’s event calendar and park programming.
