Senate Agriculture Committee introduces page, schedules rules review

Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Senator Tammy Nichols convened a short organizational meeting and introduced the committee’s senate page, Gage Griffin, who said he attends Emmett High School and will graduate with the class of 2025. The committee also directed members to review materials in their packets, including a 2024 Department of Agriculture performance report and the department’s strategic plan, and announced that rules review will begin Thursday with Vice Chair Senator Christy Zitto providing additional guidance.
The meeting opened with Nichols saying, “Agriculture is such a vital and critical part to our state,” and describing the session as an opportunity for the committee to “elevate” its work. Page Gage Griffin introduced himself to the committee: “I attend Emmet High School, and I will be graduating with the class of 2025 this year.” He told senators he runs a clothing brand focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness and said he is interested in learning more about agriculture while serving as a page.
Several senators used the introductions to share brief remarks about their districts and agricultural backgrounds. Senator Ron Taylor described representing primarily agricultural counties in District 26; Senator Julie Van Orden noted she represents production agriculture interests in southeastern Idaho; Senator Carrie Summelroth summarized her connection to agriculture as “I eat food” when asked what she brings as an educator; and others briefly described family farms, FFA experience, and local agricultural businesses.
Nichols told the committee staff member Rachel will remain in a silent role to record the meeting and asked members to wave or otherwise get her attention if they have comments. She closed by reminding members that the packet materials include the Department of Agriculture’s 2024 performance report and the department strategic plan and by stating the committee will begin rules review Thursday, with Vice Chair Senator Christy Zitto to provide further instructions at that meeting.
No motions, votes, or formal policy actions were recorded at the meeting. The session was primarily introductory and organizational: member introductions, the page’s introduction, logistical notes about staff and meeting procedure, and scheduling of the rules review.
