Community education & recreation reports record summer camp registrations and advances accreditation work

Orange Community Education & Recreation (OCR) told the board on Jan. 27 that summer camp registration opened with more than 2,300 enrollments processed on the first day and that some camps are already full.
OCR staff said the department had more than 3,800 camp seats available across roughly eight weeks and that approximately 1,500 spots remained after initial registration. OCR said it moved art camps back to the art center and added new offerings such as Eco Explorers and Fashion Design for Sustainable Style, and reported openings in sports camps and Safety Town.
Staff also said OCR submitted its self-assessment on Jan. 14 as part of its National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) accreditation process. The digital review portion will begin in early March and an on-site review is scheduled for March 19–21. OCR staff described three planning documents created for accreditation: a Recreation for All plan to improve access and inclusion; a Master Program & Facilities Plan to inventory resources and evaluate future facility needs; and an Employee Development Plan to document career paths and cross-coverage.
OCR said next steps include a Valentine’s dance on Feb. 8, a National Girls and Women in Sports Day event at Ursuline College on Feb. 2, and a preschool prom on April 11. Staff also said they will continue summer staffing recruitment and training into May and June.
OCR credited staff and community stakeholders for input into the planning documents and reported confidence that the department will be accredited when NRPA confers accreditation at its September conference if the on-site review and follow-up items meet standards.
