Committee advances bill to require fingerprint checks for remaining Real ID issuers

A House committee advanced House Bill 22, which sponsors said would align state procedures with federal Real ID issuance requirements by ensuring fingerprint background checks for staff and agents who issue Real IDs.
Representative James Petzke, R.-District 21, told the committee there are about 800 DMV staff and agents who issue Real IDs and that about 700 of them already have undergone fingerprint background checks. He said roughly 100 staff had not yet been checked and the bill creates the mechanism to do so.
"There's a small fiscal note attached to it, but it's all going to be, within ITD's current operating budget to take care of that for the assessors who have this issue," Petzke said, referring to the Idaho Transportation Department's budget covering the necessary steps.
There were no public witnesses on the bill. Representative Mickelson moved that the committee send House Bill 22 to the floor with a "do pass" recommendation; the motion passed on a voice vote with no opposition recorded.
The bill will now move to the full House for further consideration.
